Energy Source
First, you need to know what the energy source is of your home. Does it run on electricity, natural gas, an oil tank, or a propane tank? Then, you will know the type of furnace to choose based on whether or not it will work with your energy source.
Home Size
To determine the furnace size that you’ll need, you’ll need to think about the size of your home. Calculate the square footage of your home in which you live. If you have an unfinished basement, you probably don’t need to heat this space. If you plan on finishing your basement, make sure to include it in your calculations. Based on the square footage, you’ll need to figure out how many British Thermal Units (BTU) you’ll need for your furnace.
Features
Think about the features that are important to you. You can have variable operation or variable speed blowers. You could have a humidity controller or air purifier in your system. Think about the needs of your household as you consider features that will be beneficial.
Efficiency
Each furnace should have the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) percentage labelled on it. You use this information to determine the ratio of heat output to the total energy consumed.
Warranty
A warranty can be indispensable when anything happens to your furnace. Make sure that you choose one with a solid warranty.
Tax Credits
You can also look for tax credits. By choosing energy efficient equipment, your furnace may qualify for tax credits. Do your research to find out which ones can provide the tax credits to you.
