The single most important thing you can do to keep your furnace and air conditioning system working efficiently is to make sure your air filter is clean and matched to your size system. Air filters also provide other benefits such as cleaner air and reduced allergy symptoms.
A dirty filter or a filter that is too small can have negative effects:
- Increased blower power consumption
- Heat exchanger failure
- Reduced cooling or heating capacity
- Compressor failure
- Higher costs
- Shorter life of the equipment
Filters range from 1” to 5” thick. They will also determine the frequency they should be changed. A dirty duct system will shorten the life of the filter. Be sure to get your ducts inspected every couple of years.
Change your air filter regularly
Check your filter every month, especially during heavy use months (winter and summer). If the filter looks dirty after a month, change it. At a minimum, change the filter every 3 months. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool — wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system — leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure.
